Startging in the late 1700s, the British East India Company controlled much of India. They built new roads and schools but also took advantage of India’s resources and people. Many Indians were unhappy with British rule, leading to resistance and rebellion that eventually changed how India was governed. A widespread mutiny by sepoy troops in 1858 led to the British government taking over the administration and establishing direct control via the British Raj. This lasted until Indian independence and partition in 1947.
