For centuries, Spain was a land of changing rulers, religions, and cultures. In 711, Muslim forces conquered much of the Iberian Peninsula, bringing Islamic rule and a period of rich cultural exchange. Over time, Christian kingdoms in the north began claiming former Visigoth land, with leaders like El Cid becoming legendary figures. This long struggle, often called the Reconquista, ended in 1492 with the fall of Granada, the last Muslim stronghold. Afterward, Ferdinand and Isabella united Spain under Catholic rule and launched the Spanish Inquisition, targeting Muslims, Jews, and others. These events shaped Spain’s history, leaving a legacy of both conflict and cultural transformation.
